Experts To Attend 100th Anniversary Earthquake Conference

Jan. 31, 2006
Marking the centennial of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, more than 2,000 professionals engaged in emergency management, earth science, engineering, risk management and business continuity from around the world will meet April 17-21 for the 100th Anniversary Earthquake Conference.

The event will include more than 100 sessions and tutorials covering issues critical to earth scientists, building owners, emergency responders, earthquake engineers, policy makers and disaster mitigation professionals.

"I'm thrilled to participate in the 1906 Earthquake Conference, which celebrates our advancements in earthquake preparedness but also questions how we can be even better equipped," said Chris Poland, chairman of the conference and past president of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute. "Collaborating with the foremost experts in earthquake engineering, geology and seismology from around the world will be beneficial to all those who are committed to disaster mitigation and preparedness. Collaboration across the disciplines is critical to advancing our understanding of mitigation."

The conference has scheduled more than 40 technical sessions highlighting the latest advances in science, engineering and emergency management and tutorials developed specifically for teachers and the business community. There will be 25 special field trips that bring home the realities and science of earthquakes. Joint plenary sessions include a centennial perspective on what happened in the 1906 earthquake and what was learned from it, earthquake scenarios and visions for continued progress. Additionally, the conference will stage a scenario that looks at how the San Francisco Bay Area would fare if the 1906 earthquake hit us today.
