Over 10,000 people died in alcohol-impaired vehicle crashes in 2010. Holidays or events like the Super Bowl, where friends tend to gather and enjoy a few drinks, can raise the risk of drivers getting behind the wheel when it's not safe to do so. And yes, that includes driving buzzed.
Through their Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving campaign, NHTSA and the Ad Council remind football fans that a buzzed driving accident can happen to anyone, anywhere, no matter which team they are rooting for. So whether you're a Giants or a Patriots fan, follow these safety tips when the Super Bowl rolls around on Sunday:
· Before drinking, designate a sober driver
· If you're impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation for a safe ride home.
· Use your community's sober ride program
· If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don't hesitate to contact your local law enforcement
· If you see someone who is impaired preparing to drive home, take the driver's keys and help them make other arrangements to get their destination safely.
