The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine has appointed Kathryn Mueller, M.D., MPH, as its new president.

Mueller is a professor at the School of Public Health and Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Campus and medical director for the Colorado Division of Workers’ Compensation in Denver.

ACOEM, the nation’s largest association representing occupational and environmental physicians, installed Mueller during its American Occupational Health Conference in San Antonio earlier this week.

An expert in disability management, Mueller has held a number of appointments and leadership positions related to treating disability in patients, including serving as associate editor of the American Medical Association’s Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment. She has had extensive experience in occupational health and workers’ compensation.

In addition to her role as president of ACOEM, Mueller previously served terms as vice president, director and secretary/treasurer of the association. She has served on and chaired a wide variety of ACOEM committees and work groups.

Mueller is a member of the Rocky Mountain Academy of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and has served that organization as president, vice president and as a member of its board of directors.

She received her M.D. degree from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, and her master’s degree in public health from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. She is certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in occupational medicine and by the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners.

More than 1,000 occupational and environmental physicians, health care providers, policy makers, vendors, government employees and other health-related professionals are participating in the American Occupational Health Conference, which focuses on health and safety in the workplace.
