Talking EHS, Episode 1: A Conversation with Terry Mathis

May 2, 2022
In this first episode of our new podcast series, we talk with safety guru Terry Mathis about how to instill a culture of safety and inspire a new generation of safety leaders.

Welcome to Talking EHS, our new podcast series. This debut episode features a conversation with long-time (and recently retired) EHS Today columnist Terry Mathis. He explains how he got started on a career in safety, from his early days at Coca-Cola, to launching his own consulting firm, ProAct Safety, and what's motivated him over the years to help companies get better at protecting their workers.

In this Q&A, you'll learn why safety professionals who are serious about advancing in their careers tend to progress from grunts to guardians to gurus—becoming true subject matter experts at all facets of occupational health and safety. Mathis explains why it took so long for the idea of safety culture to catch on, and how the development of safety metrics has helped safety professionals define what success looks like. And you'll hear why he is so passionate about safety leadership, and why leaders fix the problem rather than fix the blame.

And after you've listened to the podcast, click here to read many years' worth of his columns for EHS Today.
