The second Thought Leaders video from the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), features Susan Ripple, MS, CIH. Ripple is the senior manager of the Dow Chemical Co.’s Industrial Hygiene Expertise Center, where she manages a team of 43 ABIH-certified industrial hygienists who provide expertise to 52,000 employees in over 200 manufacturing facilities in 20 countries.
In the video, Ripple speaks about the development and progress of occupational exposure limits and the role of industrial hygienists in risk management strategies.
She has authored 22 AIHA Emergency Response Planning Guidelines and has provided chemical expertise to EPA, DOE and FBI committees. She also serves as the concept leader for the emerging Globally Harmonized System (GHS) Hazard Banding Matrix with NIOSH and OSHA. Ripple will receive AIHA’s prestigious Alice Hamilton Award when she is honored in May during AIHce 2013 in Montreal, Canada.
The Thought Leaders Project captures the stories of several influential AIHA members. These stories, recorded live, offer snapshots of a profession and an association constantly adjusting to new challenges, new occupational hazards and new technologies for protecting workers. Each story will present a different perspective on the profession’s evolution and the efforts of industry leaders to navigate the changing field of industrial hygiene.
The first Though Leaders Project video featured Jim Thornton, CIH, CSP, director of Health, Safety and Environment for Northrop Grumman Newport News. Thornton shared his thoughts on the future of industrial hygiene.
The Thought Leaders Project will run through May 2014, when AIHA will celebrate the history of industrial hygiene at AIHce 2014.
