ABIH to Raise Awareness about the Certified Industrial Hygienist Credential

Nov. 1, 2012
The American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) is launching a campaign in the public, private and government sectors to raise awareness about the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential.

A Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is a professional who has expertise and skills in air sampling and instrumentation, biohazards, noise, engineering controls and more. The American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH), which promotes the advancement of the industrial hygiene profession by offering the CIH certification, aims to create awareness about the important role IH professionals play in today’s society through a new campaign.

“The ABIH role is critical to ensure that only qualified and knowledgeable individuals attain the CIH credential, our highest level of recognition for industrial hygiene professionals,” said Tracy Parsons, CIH, administrative program manager at ABIH. “This new campaign will increase awareness of the ABIH’s role and of the benefits of using CIHs.”

As part of its campaign, ABIH has begun working with the public relations professionals at Cochrane & Associates LLC. The company has a long history of working with professionals from the industrial hygiene, health & safety, indoor air quality, building sciences and infectious disease control industries. Cochrane & Associates will also be employing their IAQ Video Network to develop online videos to disseminate important industrial hygiene and ABIH related information.

CIHs have demonstrated knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Air Sampling & Instrumentation
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Basic Science
  • Biohazards
  • Biostatistics & Epidemiology
  • Community Exposure
  • Engineering Controls/Ventilation
  • Ergonomics
  • Health Risk Analysis & Hazard Communication
  • IH Program Management
  • Noise
  • Non-Engineering Controls
  • Radiation – Ionizing and Non-ionizing
  • Thermal Stressors
  • Toxicology
  • Work Environments & Industrial Processes

More than 6,500 CIHs can be found worldwide, according to ABIH.

ABIH is a not-for-profit corporation and is a premier organization for certifying professionals in the practice of industrial hygiene.
