Counting Zs: How Much Sleep Do You Need?

The truth is that most adults in the U.S. aren't getting enough rest.

Sleeping in late on your days off? You might not be getting enough sleep.

Taking naps? You might not be getting enough sleep.

The average adult needs seven to eight hours of sleep per day, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Yet, one-third of Americans usually get fewer than seven hours of sleep. And 50 percent to 70 percent of U.S. adults have sleep or wakefulness disorders.

In honor of National Sleep Week, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute created a sleep IQ test. See how well you know common misconceptions about sleep.
