Wisconsin 20th State to Adopt Latest Edition of NFPA 1 Fire Code

March 7, 2008
Effective March 1, Wisconsin became the latest state to adopt the most recent edition of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1: Uniform Fire Code to provide a comprehensive approach to fire code regulation and hazard management.

“Today, perhaps more than ever, it is essential to provide the latest tools and training to the firefighters and building professionals charged with protecting people from fire,” said Joe Hertel, program manager of the Department of Commerce’s safety and buildings division. “This code adoption will help to ensure that the people and buildings of Wisconsin are getting the best protection possible.”

Recognized worldwide and adopted in 20 states, NFPA 1: Uniform Fire Code provides the necessary requirements to establish a reasonable level of safety and property protection from fire and explosion hazards. It also incorporates extracts and references to over 125 NFPA codes and standards to cover all aspects of fire protection.

Wisconsin has participated in training and also is scheduled to engage in NFPA-developed programs and future training sessions. NFPA technical experts will provide instruction that covers the codes’ requirements and the numerous ways they can be utilized and enforced. These programs are offered to states that have adopted NFPA 1 and other key codes and standards.

The training and the associated codebooks are free to government code enforcement officials.
