The Federal Highway Administration honored Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Bradley L. Mallory with its first Environmental Stewardship Award.
Frederick "Bud" Wright, executive director of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), presented the award to Mallory last week during the spring meeting of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Mallory is AASHTO president this year.
"This award acknowledges your personal efforts and environmental leadership, not only at PennDOT, but also with AASHTO," FHWA administrator Mary E. Peters wrote to Mallory in the award-notification letter. "You have provided a high standard of commitment to sound planning practices, and have built solid and effective partnerships to protect and enhance the environment, while improving transportation."
Mallory said he was grateful to be recognized by the Federal Highway Administration, adding, "I strongly believe that a commitment to the environment is crucial if we are to move transportation forward in Pennsylvania and across the nation. We at PennDOT are working hard to be good environmental stewards as we provide a safer, swifter and smoother transportation experience."
Among the accomplishments cited by FHWA are:
- PennDOT's reengineering of nearly 30 core business activities to slash red tape associated with service delivery and to implement environmental stewardship throughout the agency;
- Mallory's efforts to develop a department ISO 14001 Environmental Management System to take PennDOT beyond compliance to a position of proactive environmental stewardship;
- Mallory's strong advocacy of the AASHTO Center for Environmental Excellence and the AASHTO Transportation Environmental Stewardship Program; and
- PennDOT's implementation of a Wetland Banking program, a Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan, and Transportation Enhancements programs.
