The Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Canada's leading developer of standards and codes, has published the latest edition of the Protective Footwear standard, Z195-02, which outlines the requirements for protective footwear.
CSA's Protective Footwear standard is recognized by provincial regulators, and referenced in legislation in many provinces across Canada. The standard outlines testing requirements for toe impact, metatarsal protection, sole puncture protection, electric shock resistance, static dissipation and sole flexing. Changes since the previous edition of the standard, published in 1992, include new requirements for electrical conductive footwear and chainsaw protection, broadening the workplace applications the standard addresses.
As a complement to the standard, a new user's guide on Protective Footwear also is available. The handbook, "Guideline on Selection, Care and Use of Protective Footwear," is a useful tool for employers, safety professionals and users of protective footwear. Practical tips include how to select the most appropriate protective footwear based on the type of job being performed and the work environment; a list of the different types of footwear available; and how to conduct a foot hazard assessment of the workplace.
Users and purchasers of protective footwear should look for the familiar green CSA patch or electrical protection tag located on the side or tongue of CSA-certified shoes and boots to ensure the products they own or are purchasing meet the rigid requirements of CSA's Protective Footwear standard.
