NFPA Offers Emergency Response Workshop for Building Managers

Jan. 30, 2002
A new workshop is designed to help building and facility managers, emergency planners and human resources professionals plan for emergency situations.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is offering a workshop to help building and facility managers, emergency planners and human resources professionals plan for emergency situations. Emergency Response Planning Workshop provides information for developing or improving emergency response and evacuation plans for the workplace, including educational and health care settings.

The all-day workshop, held in 11 U.S. cities, will teach participants how to assess different types of emergency conditions (i.e., fire, hazardous materials, violence, etc.) to determine whether evacuation is required. The program also helps evaluate building safety systems' operational readiness and provides evacuation information to train building occupants.

"The events of Sept. 11 have heightened our awareness of the importance of having a well-developed and regularly practiced emergency response plan, especially in large or complex structures," said George D. Miller, NFPA's president and CEO. "As we all adjust to the changes that continue to unfold and take steps to maximize the safety of our buildings and occupants, NFPA and its partners stand ready to help meet the challenges by providing reliable guidance and information."

Since shortly after Sept. 11, NFPA has been offering free online information from its Web site, www.nfpa.org, to code officials, building managers and others interested in conducting evacuation drills.

2002 workshop dates and locations are as follows: Dallas - Feb. 25; Kansas City, MO - March 1; Seattle - March 4; San Francisco - March 6; Denver - March 8; Philadelphia - March 11; New York - March 13; Washington, D.C. - March 15; Atlanta - March 18; Chicago - March 20; Boston - March 25.

All attendees are eligible for continuing education units (CEUs). For more information, please visit www.nfpalearn.org or call 1-800-344-3555.
