DuPont Will Receive National Safety Council Green Cross for Safety

NSC Board of Directors Chairman Ather Williams Jr. announced the selection of DuPont during the opening session of NSC's 93rd Annual Congress and Expo, which was held Sept. 21-23 in Orlando, Fla.

Established in 1999, the Green Cross for Safety award recognizes organizations and their leaders for outstanding achievements in safety and health, community service and responsible citizenship.

DuPont Chairman and CEO Charles Holliday Jr., who was unable to attend the NSC Congress and Expo, said in a statement that safety is "in the DNA of DuPont."

"Every DuPont employee will feel he or she helped earn the Green Cross Award," Holliday said. "That is as it should be, because at DuPont, safety is a core value that touches every individual in every job."

DuPont Safety & Protection Group Vice President Ellen Kullman, who accepted the award on behalf of DuPont, called on participants in the 17th World Congress on Safety and Health at Work which was held simultaneously with the NSC Congress and Expo to strengthen "our efforts through collaboration and prevention" in enhancing workplace safety over the next 3 years before the next World Congress.

"We cannot settle for anything less than safe workplaces for employees in every country around the world," Kullman said.

DuPont was a major sponsor of the 17th World Congress, which was held in the United States for the first time. The event is held every 3 years.

DuPont is the seventh recipient of the Green Cross for Safety award. The previous honorees were Liberty Mutual Group, AK Steel Corp., Intel Corp., Ryder Systems, Kenny Construction Co. and DaimlerChrysler.

"Our mission is to promote safety in industry and all aspects of our lives," NSC President and CEO Alan McMillan said. "In recent years, we have made it a priority to compel business leaders from all industries to embrace safety as a core corporate value. … DuPont is among today's leaders incorporating safety into their organization's leadership philosophy and making it a core corporate value."

DuPont also was one of 15 companies at this year's World Congress to announce they had signed a declaration of their commitment to advance workplace and home safety globally over the next 3 years. The declaration calls on participating companies "to effect real-world change to achieve an attainable goal of increased safety and injury reduction."
