OSHA Timeline Showcases 40 Years of Occupational Safety

Feb. 24, 2011
A new, interactive OSHA timeline commemorating 40 years of progress protecting the safety and health of American workers illustrates the milestones OSHA and its state partners have achieved in their efforts to reduce injuries, illnesses and deaths.

The timeline can be viewed at http://www.osha.gov/osha40/timeline.html.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act was signed into law by President Nixon on Dec. 29, 1970. On April 28, 1971, OSHA was created. Over the course of the following 4 decades, the nation has made dramatic progress in reducing work related deaths and injures, the agency said.

“We hope you will join us in this anniversary year as we recognize OSHA’s accomplishments and reaffirm our dedication to the agency’s mission,” said OSHA Administrator Dr. David Michaels. “Help us celebrate 4 decades of healthier workers, safer workplaces, and a stronger America.”

OSHA invites the public to visit the timeline and explore 40 years of progress in workplace health and safety. Visit the OSHA at 40 Web page to read Michaels’ anniversary message about OSHA’s journey during the past 40 years and its priorities for the future, as well as to learn about activities throughout the year to celebrate the agency’s accomplishments.

“Today workplaces in America are far safer than forty years ago,” Michaels wrote in his message. “Our progress gives us hope and confidence that OSHA will continue to make a lasting difference in the lives of our nation's 130 million workers, and their families.”
