In recent years, traffic fatalities over Labor Day weekend have averaged nearly 15 percent higher than similar, non-holiday periods. This year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is enforcing a National Impaired Driving Crackdown from Aug. 19 to Sept. 5, when law enforcement officials will focus their attention on impaired drivers.
NSC recommends that all drivers and passengers wear seatbelts to protect themselves while on the road this Labor Day or at any other time. In fact, NSC estimates that 142 people may survive this holiday weekend because they chose to wear seatbelts.
NSC offers the follow tips to ensure safe travels over the holiday:
- If you are drinking, do not get behind the wheel.
- If you plan to drink, designate a non-drinking driver or plan for alternative transportation, such as a bus or taxi.
- Because young drivers are at particular risk to be involved in alcohol-related crashes, strictly enforce a zero tolerance policy with alcohol for young drivers in your family.
- Your best defense against a drunk driver is wearing your safety belt, so buckle up.
- Establish and enforce a driver’s distraction-free zone, especially in cars equipped with electronic devices including cell phones, video games and global positioning systems.
- Make sure all passengers are buckled up and children are in age-appropriate safety seats.
- Allow plenty of travel time to avoid frustration and the impulse to speed.
- Drive defensively and exercise caution, especially during inclement weather.
NSC also encourages organizations and individuals to use NHTSA planning materials, including posters and television ads, to educate employees and their local communities about driving safely this Labor Day weekend.
