EHS Today, a magazine dedicated to the management of risk in the workplace and environment, is proud to announce that eight companies have been named to the 2009 list of America's Safest Companies. These companies provide a safe working environment for tens of thousands of employees, protect the environment and act as advocates for health and safety.

America's Safest Companies, founded in 2002, is a corporate award honoring the safest companies in the United States. This year’s list of America’s Safest Companies includes AMEC Earth & Environmental Inc., the Concrete Pipe Division of Cemex, Medtronic Inc., Morin Actuator, RQ Construction Inc., Trendmaker Homes, Trihydro Corp. and Wood Group Power Plant Services. Representatives from the 2009 America’s Safest Companies will receive their awards at a reception tonight at Hue Restaurant in Orlando, Fla.

To be considered one of America's Safest Companies, organizations must demonstrate: support from management and employee involvement; innovative solutions to safety challenges; injury and illness rates lower than the average for their industries; comprehensive training programs; evidence that prevention of incidents is the cornerstone of the safety process; good communication about the value of safety; and a way to substantiate the benefits of the safety process.

”We were amazed at the quality of the applications we received this year," said Sandy Smith, executive editor of EHS Today. “We had tough choices to make and the list for 2009 includes companies that go beyond goals of zero injuries or OSHA compliance. For these companies, having an injury-free year is expected, going beyond OSHA compliance is a given and devoting resources to environmental management and employee health and wellness is part of doing business.”

EHS Today commends the sponsors of America's Safest Companies – Gold Sponsor MCR Safety and Silver Sponsor PureSafety – for their commitment to promoting safe work environments and for their support in recognizing the country's safest workplaces.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit ruled that in the case of Elaine Chao v. Summit Contractors, OSHA regulation 29 C.F.R. Sec. 1910.12(a) “is unambiguous in that it does not preclude OSHA from issuing citations to employers for violations when their own employees are not exposed to any hazards related to the violations.”
