BCSP Establishes Safety Scholarship Fund

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) recently established a scholarship fund within the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation, with the first $1,000 scholarship to be awarded in 2008 to a graduate or undergraduate student pursuing a safety-related degree.

The BCSP Scholarship Fund was created to contribute to the safety, health and environmental field, as well as to recognize exemplary safety professionals with a history of fine work within the profession and BCSP. The ASSE Foundation will manage the fund, select candidates and award scholarships, while BCSP will oversee the fund and name future scholarships.

The first scholarship is named in honor of Glenn D. Daviet, who had been a BCSP director since 2004. He was serving as the organization’s secretary-treasurer at the time of his passing in July 2007.

“Remembering and acknowledging the efforts of exceptional individuals is not only our obligation as leaders – but more importantly – a privilege,” said BCSP’s 2007 President, Jeffrey L. Robinson. “BCSP can accomplish this and give back to the profession through the BCSP Scholarship Fund.”

BCSP intends to develop the scholarship fund until it becomes “perpetually endowed.”

“The ASSE Foundation thanks BCSP for their generous donation this year toward a new scholarship,” said ASSE Foundation Chair Cynthia Roth. “The organization’s support of the ASSE Foundation helps to provide opportunities for safety professionals and aids students pursuing degrees in the safety, health and environmental field.”

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit ruled that in the case of Elaine Chao v. Summit Contractors, OSHA regulation 29 C.F.R. Sec. 1910.12(a) “is unambiguous in that it does not preclude OSHA from issuing citations to employers for violations when their own employees are not exposed to any hazards related to the violations.”
