America’s Safest Companies 2016: There’s No Finish Line When It Comes To Safety

Aug. 22, 2016
The 10 companies honored as America’s Safest represent a variety of industries and embody the best in safety culture leadership.

EHS Today has named 10 companies – American Bridge Co., Club Car LLC, EnPro Industries, Hunter Site Services, Leprino Foods Co., Middough Inc., Ryan Incorporated Central, Saulsbury Industries, South Dakota Wheat Growers and South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Co. – to the list of 2016 America’s Safest Companies.

“This year we probably have a wider representation of industries than any other year,” said EHS Today Editor in Chief Sandy Smith. “These companies represent industries as diverse as heavy construction, agriculture, oil and gas, light and heavy manufacturing, food manufacturing, refining and nuclear power. Despite the obvious differences in their industries, these 10 America’s Safest Companies share a passion for safety and the environment, and treat EHS as a building block necessary for global business success.”

“Our company strives to strongly advocate safety as an extension of our stated value as an ethical company,” said John Forrester, corporate safety manager, Leprino Foods Co. “Safety is viewed as an important aspect of overall business performance and is given equal weight in meetings as an indicator of our effectiveness as a company.”

Joseph Corvello, CMS, corporate director of health, safety and environment at American Bridge Co., said his company has a “strong desire to be a global leader in our industry. We strive to not only build the world’s most iconic structures, but to be known for our exemplary safety program and culture.”

All of the 2016 America’s Safest Companies demonstrated support from management and employee involvement; provided innovative solutions to safety challenges; reported injury and illness rates significantly lower than the average for their industries; supported comprehensive training programs; believed that that prevention of incidents is the cornerstone of the safety process; integrated safety into their corporate culture and communicated the value of safety to employees and customers; and substantiated the benefits of the safety process.

“Club Car is committed to operating in a way that safeguards our people,” said Safety Leader Christine Jay, CSP. “We realize that the health and safety of our employees and communities are among our most important sustainability focus areas. To achieve a zero injury and incident culture, we are committed to integrating sound environmental, health and safety practices into our everyday activities.”

At Saulsbury Industries, employees daily are reminded about safety through activities such as the Huddle Up Process – which is performed three times a day in the field based on company-wide trending data that identifies three peak times related to incidents – and a pre-task planning process that allows employees to review all potential hazards prior to beginning the work day.

“Our mission is, and always will be, to send each and every employee home safe at the end of the day to their family and friends,” said Corporate HSE Director Eddie Gonzales. “We are relentless in our pursuit of continued improvement. We believe there is no finish line.”

EHS Today, a Penton brand, serves as a resource for safety, health and industrial hygiene professionals in the manufacturing, construction, and service sectors, informing them about trends, management strategies, regulatory news and new products to help them provide safe and healthy work sites.

The companies will be honored Sept. 20 at the Heinz History Center during a special night out at EHS Today's Safest Leadership Conference in Pittsburgh.

The America's Safest Companies awards are sponsored by MCR Safety.
